Despite what the filmmakers were trying to claim, it’s probably not by accident that oranges appear every time something bad happens in The Godfather. They are used to foreshadow either deaths or attacks against the family in more than a dozen scenes.
Though the use of oranges was claimed to be related purely to set design, the chances of that being by accident are pretty slim – so it’s definitely meant to be used as an omen for bad things happening.
