Any Stanley Kubrick fan will tell you that nothing is done by mistake in his movies. So when we realize that the Overlook Hotel in The Shining has an impossible floor plan, we have to chalk it up to his brilliance. What do we mean by “impossible”? Take a look at this floor plan, which places each room where it is according to the film.

The Shining and the impossible hotel

In one scene, Danny rides his trike around the corridors, and his route makes no sense at all. In another scene, Jack is in Ullman’s office – an office that has a window, despite it being on the inside of the building and shouldn’t have one. Assuming Kubrick knew every inch of his set, the layout was purposely confusing to unsettle the audience, and we can’t say it didn’t work.
