Following the major success of Alien, James Cameron set apart the sequel by bringing the Vietnam War onto the screen. He reportedly used imagery that was meant to subliminally resemble that of the war and make the viewer feel anxious.
Once the overconfident troops go in, they end up as sitting ducks, as the others watch helplessly through screens. As you may know, the Vietnam War was called the Television War, as people were able for the first time to watch it on their monitors at home. At the end, the casualties were the fault of the corrupt politicians that sent them there unprepared.
