Stanley Kubrick really did a brilliant job of translating Stephen King’s dark themes into The Shining movie. Take his use of bad omens, for example, which foreshadow people’s fate. When Jack first phones Wendy, telling her he got a job at the Overlook Hotel, there’s a black curtain covering the entrance.
Later, when the couple is introduced to where they’ll be staying at the hotel, there’s a curtain dividing the living room and the bedroom. The curtain scenes are tucked away between scenes of Danny’s use of the Shining – talking to Tony in the mirror, or having a vision of the bloody elevator. Additionally, exactly 66 minutes and six seconds into the movie, we see Jack taking a sip of his first drink at the hotel, after noting he’d give his “goddamn soul” for it.
